29th May 2024 - Day 9

John got up at 6am this morning so that we could get off the Napton Narrowboat moorings and we headed towards Wheaton Aston.  We cruised for about an hour and then stopped for breakfast and to take the dogs for a nice walk.  We were back cruising by 9am. The Shropshire Union canal has not captured our hearts yet, the journey to Wheaton Aston was a difficult one with loads of narrow points where only one boat can pass at a time and as always as soon as we hit a narrow point another boat came against us.  The canal was covered with loads of trees so the cruising was often very dark and very isolated.  The weather was better so that was a bonus.  Breewood was a nice place and if we had been looking for a mooring for the night that would have been a good place.  There is also a pub called the Bridge which has washing machines in the car park for boaters to use.  We didn’t know that until we got to Wheaton Aston.  The bridges on the Shropshire still have good examples of the poles where the horses ropes went which was nice to see.  We went through Wheaton Aston lock and then this opened out onto a lovely landing area for the toilet, rubbish and water.  At the lock I had met a lady who pointed out a lovely mooring for the night which was very safe and close to the town.  We moored up and then walked the dogs into the village to the local shop and then we went into the Hartley Arms for a drink.  There was a little garage on the canal as well that sold calor gas and diesel so we even managed to change our gas bottle so all in all a very good mooring spot.  I think this is one of the friendliest places I have ever been, the locals were really lovely, everyone stopped and chatted and Georgie stole the show in the pub.  After a few drinks we headed back to the boat for another chilled out evening.
